Hayle Academy’s Abbie took part in the Cornwall final of the Springboard Future Chef competition on Wednesday 24th January. The competition saw Abbie go up against seven other local winners from around the county to decide on the overall Cornwall winner. Up for grabs was the chance to represent the county in the regional final. All the competitors had already won two rounds to get to this stage, so the standard of cooking was very high making it difficult for the judges to decide on a winner. The event took place in the very exclusive Rick Stein’s cookery school in Padstow and the judges were all top industry professionals, including Nick Evans who is the head chef and lecturer at the school. Abbie practiced her dishes at school and home for weeks in the lead up and was very lucky to have the support and tuition of local head chef Glenn Gatland from Una, St Ives. With Glenn’s help, Abbie refined her dishes, techniques and presentation. Abbie was calm and composed going into the Cornwall final – she was confident cooking her fish pie with Cornish greens, followed by a fruit crumble tart with Crème Anglaise. It was a close and fierce competition, the judges spent a long time deliberating the final verdict and although Abbie did not win, she received excellent feedback with only minor points that kept her off the podium. She did herself, the school and the local area proud. Abbie has thoroughly enjoyed her experience and has gained immense knowledge from the competition and has been lucky enough to secure work experience in the summer term with Glenn at Una, St Ives. Well done Abbie, a fantastic opportunity grabbed with both hands! By: Mr W Gilbert
